Your Wealth Isn’t a Number… It’s a Moving Target
Most people think they know what they’re worth.
It feels like a simple equation: assets minus liabilities. Done.
But real life doesn’t fit neatly into a spreadsheet.
You might have a general sense of your financial position, but under the surface, there’s often a big difference between what’s written down and what’s actually accessible, useful, or reliable. And the more wealth you build, the more abstract some of it becomes.
Take property, for example.
Most of the time, we treat it as if the value is locked in. You saw a recent sale nearby, so you assume yours is worth the same. But there’s no guarantee someone would pay that figure tomorrow—or that you'd be in a position to sell quickly if you needed to.
A business? Even harder.
Your effort might have built something valuable, but markets shift, timing matters, and buyers aren’t always ready when you are.
And then there are side investments, private loans, or ownership through trusts or companies. Structures that feel solid on paper, but can be hard to value or untangle.
All of this creates a false sense of clarity.
So when clients ask, “What am I worth?”,
I don’t answer with a single number.
I talk in ranges. In possibilities. In what's usable now versus what's theoretical later.
Because the real value of your wealth isn’t just about dollars.
It’s about how accessible and meaningful those dollars are when life happens.
