What Legacy Are You Creating with Your Money?
As a parent you help shape your kid’s relationship with money whether you like it or not.
The actions you display and the words you use will have much more power than dollars handed over during your life or when you pass.
The answer to these questions will shape the legacy you create.
Do you actively invest?
Or do you focus on the home loan and credit cards to “build” wealth?
Do you openly talk about money?
Or it a taboo topic that hides in the shadows?
Do you talk about money as a tool to get what you want in life?
Or it is something that burdens you and stresses you out?
Most of us don’t want our kids spend like drunken sailor or counting every penny. To help build a lasting legacy it’s about starting to build the right relationship with money today.
I’ve worked with people that have inherited hundreds of thousands of dollars, to those that have only inherited a pile of debt and responsibility, only for them to need to pick up the pieces.
The amount of money helped but wasn’t a determine factor in them being successful (whatever that means to you) or happy in life.
How you use your foundations years is key, the point in your life where you can influence how your kids think about money.
You can’t control the outcome, your kids will become people, adults in their own right. They will make wrong decisions at times but it’s how they learn form this that will determine the person they become.
In my experience too many parents focus on the desired outcomes without assessing themselves first. Go back to the questions above, are you doing all of these today? If not this is the starting point to build your legacy.
The next step beyond this is to get a rock solid financial plan in place to ensure you get and keep momentum to working towards the life you want for you and your family.
